Like an old-time silent movie

my memories of Managua flicker

in faded black and white

halting and jerking, just

like the tiny taxis darting

round the roundabouts

punctuating the city’s boulevards.

Nurses in starchy white uniforms,

housekeepers with mops at attention,

black-haired children with zippered chests,

healing hearts beating beneath bandages

with the newfound certainty of a metronome
