Submission Guidelines

General Information
The Intima publishes original contributions that relate to the theory and practice of narrative medicine. All work submitted becomes the property of The Intima and may be reproduced in part or whole at the discretion of the Editors in future publications both online or in print. Comments and feedback including notes from the selection process may not be made available to all applicants. Intellectual property rights are retained by the author. We welcome simultaneous submissions, but notification is required if your work is accepted at another publication. Please do not submit previously published work.

Patient Privacy Notice
The Intima adheres to legal and ethical guidelines in accordance with academic and health community publication standards.  As clinicians, patients, and family members, we feel strongly that patient privacy and confidentiality be maintained at all times.  We simultaneously recognize that narrative power depends on intimate, singular encounters and the sharing of personal accounts in a respectful and safe environment. To maintain these standards, contributors should review the confidentiality guidelines in the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), with particular attention to the 18 commonly accepted "unique identifiers." We also encourage contributors to seek permission before submitting patient stories, and to fictionalize or change identifiable information whenever possible and appropriate to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy.  Please contact editor@theintima.org with any further questions or concerns.

How to Submit
Any quotations or citations should follow MLA style formatting. Manuscripts and media should be submitted online via the The Intima online manuscript submission and review system. The comments section of the submission form should contain your name, contact information, word count, and any contextual information you'd like us to know or that you'd like published alongside the piece. The manuscript itself should not include the author's name or other identifying information.

Please submit as a Microsoft Word (.docx or .doc) file; media should be submitted in JPEG, PNG, or MP3 format. We accept prose works of up to 5000 words (1000 words for Field Notes), poetry of up to one page, as well as artwork and multimedia. More detailed submission guidelines can be found below.

If you have any additional questions or a pre-submission inquiry please email submissions@theintima.org

Non-fiction
Perhaps nowhere in literature does the written word hold more bounty than the Narrative experience. The Intima welcomes submissions of clinical resonance from a personal/familial/professional perspective. We will consider excerpts from longer works if they stand alone as self-contained stories.

Fiction
The ability to look at experiences from a distance allows writers and their readers to capture the essence of the intimate experience in a new frame. The re-issuing of those experienced scenes captures and re-examines the impact of health care via translation. We will consider excerpts from longer works if they stand alone as self-contained stories.

Poetry
Poetry evades strict definition and accordingly, this section may contain diverse forms of writing. The Intima welcomes poetry that deals with any aspect along the illness/healing/caregiving continuum. Poems should preferably be no longer than one page in length; submissions of up to three poems will be considered. Please do not submit previously published work.

Academic
Narrative medicine is a newly recognized entity, seeking to reinforce and re-define the interface between patient and  physician, caregiver and patient, patient and family, all those whose lives are touched and altered by the experience of illness. Methodology, essay, practicum experience; all serve to share, educate and promote the skills and horizons of the practice of Narrative technique.

Field Notes

Field Notes will include descriptive and narrative essays that highlight the personal experiences of providers implementing Narrative Medicine techniques and strategies in their work. We welcome statements from clinicians in all disciplines reflecting on their practice. Also, participants in Narrative Medicine workshops and programs may submit narrative essays that describe their experience taking part in such activities and the long-term effects of the workshops.

Studio Art
The Intima welcomes  painting, photography or other visual representations of narratives
as opportunities to explore boundaries of health, wellness, and the power of telling. Please send images as PNG or JPG files.

Multimedia
The Intima Channel features audio or visual recordings that explore themes in Narrative Medicine. Please use the submissions form to upload audio recordings as MP3 files. For video submissions, please contact submissions@theintima.org. Please do not submit previously published work.
