11 DAYS | Carmencita Balagtas

This painting commemorates my son's 11 days of isolation in an infectious disease hospital room in 2020, at the height of COVID. My son was 18-years-old, has autism and is non-speaking. I stayed in the isolation room to facilitate communication with medical professionals and my son, who, without my presence, could not understand why medical attention was required and was not cooperating. To entertain a rather impatient patient, we resorted to spelling words over and over again. In the painting, the letters between the child and mother are his writing taken from the hospital notebook. I used the acrylic transfer technique to copy his actual writing and incorporate it into my painting.
