MENTAL HEALTH STIGMA ROOTED IN KOREAN CULTURE: A Korean American's visual reflection using Hangul, the Korean alphabet | Julie Hwang

Julie Hwang is an aspiring physician who hopes to integrate both the wonders of science and humanities to make medicine a holistic healing process and to never lose sight of the person behind the illness. She graduated from Duke University, where she studied Visual Art in Narrative Medicine. Her multimedia project, Mental Health Stigma Rooted in Korean Culture, highlights culturally-influenced biases and calls for us to reflect on our own deeply rooted values that can hinder patients from seeking proper treatment. This cultural humility in medicine, she hopes, can lift the societal stigma on mental health and help patients seek mental health care more openly.
