“Potential” contrasts the hopes of a pregnant woman with the grief of miscarrying. In adjacent frames, the same woman is shown pregnant, holding a baby, and in a pool of blood intended to symbolize the loss of the pregnancy. The baby is depicted in black and white, representing the longing of the woman for a child (hence, the title “Potential”). Peonies, a symbol of love, fertility and healing complement the background; additionally, the peony above the miscarrying woman is wilted to demonstrate her internal struggle.

Rachel Scheub is a third-year medical student at Albany Medical College in Albany, New York. The emotional weight of medical diagnoses and the beauty of empathetic patient care inspire her; additionally, she hopes to create art that is compelling to healthcare providers both professionally and personally.
